How to register your own IP address with JusProgDNS

If you wish to register your own IP address with JusProgDNS – whether to configure your own settings, to obtain a higher query quota, or because you are setting up JusProgDNS for a school, a nursery or another organisation – the first question to ask is:

• Do you have a static or a dynamic IP address?

For private individuals using, for example, a DSL router (often a FRITZ!Box) as their internet access device, providers such as Deutsche Telekom or Vodafone/Kabel Deutschland sometimes change the IP addresses; when browsing on mobile networks, this happens constantly. Private individuals with standard DSL contracts usually have a dynamically assigned IP address. However, with most internet service providers, it is also possible to request a static IP address.

Schools, companies and organisations, on the other hand, usually have a static IP address that remains the same for years. In this case, it is very easy to match the children and young people browsing with JusProgDNS to the settings you have specified in your JusProgDNS profile.

Registering a static IP address with JusProgDNS

To register your static IP address with JusProgDNS, log in to www.jusprogdns.com and select the ‘Profile’ menu item. Here you will find the ‘IP Addresses’ section. Enter your static IP address under ‘New IP Address’. The address should be entered using dots.

If you do not know your own static IP address, simply visit this webpage, where your current IP address will be displayed at the top: www.wieistmeineip.de

Note: It is usually sufficient to enter an IPv4 address, but you can also enter an IPv6 address or register both IP addresses (one after the other).

Setting up a dynamic IP

If you have a dynamic IP – whether as a private individual or for any other reason – the setup is a little more involved than with a static IP, but ultimately very straightforward, at least if you’re using a DSL router (e.g. FRITZ!Box).

You need to set up a service that regularly transmits your current IP address to JusProgDNS and updates it there – this is known as a ‘DynDNS service’ (from ‘dynamic DNS or IP’). Most DSL routers already have a function for this, into which you simply need to enter your DynDNS details from JusProgDNS. You can find out how to do this here:

Tip: You do not need to run JusProgDNS on the same device as the DynDNS service. So, for example, you can set up the JusProgDNS DynDNS service on your DSL router (to keep your IP address up to date in your profile), whilst setting up parental controls using the JusProgDNS name servers only on, for example, the computer or tablet used by your child or teenager.
