Step-by-step

The location within the device where the name server settings can be changed varies from device to device. However, it is possible on almost all internet-enabled devices – whether a DSL router, computer, network device, games console, TV set, etc. We have prepared step-by-step guides for some devices (click here). For other devices, you can find the information in the device’s user manual or by searching on Google or Ecosia (search terms: device name and “set up DNS server”).

To be on the safe side, make a note of the previous settings (take a screenshot or a photo with your mobile), so you can easily revert to them at any time and test JusProgDNS without any risk.

You can choose from age groups starting at 0, 6, 12 or 16 years. You are no doubt familiar with these age groups from the age ratings for computer games, films or DVDs. In JusProgDNS, the age groups are initially defined by selecting specific IP addresses, which you enter as name servers on the device.

On most devices, you need to enter two IP addresses; they must belong to the same age category. This protects against server outages, as if one IP address is unavailable, the device will automatically query the other IP address (JusProgDNS uses servers in different data centres). If you can only enter one IP address, please select the first IP address for that age category from the list below.

If you have only a single input field, enter the IP address separated by full stops, as shown in the list below. However, if there are several input fields available for each IP address, omit the full stops and enter only the number sequences between the full stops in each field. Please check your entry carefully, as any errors will prevent the JusProg name server from being reached and your device will no longer be able to access the internet.

There are also two IPv6 addresses available for each age group. If your device offers options to enter nameservers for IPv6 addresses (What is this? See FAQ), please enter these as well:

By selecting the IP addresses appropriate for the age group (see the previous step) and entering them into the device, you have selected the default age group for your child. However, you can only customise settings, unblock or block additional websites, or change the age group if you register with JusProgDNS. Registration is free and straightforward. We comply with data protection regulations and do not pass on any data to third parties.

Only by registering and logging in can you temporarily disable JusProgDNS protection and, as a parent, browse the internet on the device without restrictions.

Note: Without registration, the daily usage allowance per device or network is limited to the number of website visits typical for private users. Schools and other organisations must register to receive a higher usage allowance from the JusProgDNS service. Schools, nurseries and all charitable organisations can use the service as premium users at a low cost-price. Commercial users and, for example, large Wi-Fi operators may be subject to a higher usage fee.

The JusProgDNS system is intended solely for the protection of children and young people and should not be used by corporate networks with users who are almost exclusively of legal age. The JusProg filter list is not designed for this purpose.

The JusProgDNS system recognises your user account when your child visits websites based on the IP address associated with your internet connection (not to be confused with the IP addresses you have entered as name servers on your device).

If you have a static IP address, please enter it in your user profile after registering and logging in. You can also save multiple IP addresses.

However, private internet connections with a DSL modem – for example, from Telekom, 1&1 or Vodafone – usually do not have a static IP address; instead, this is changed regularly by the internet service provider. To ensure that JusProgDNS is still aware of your current IP address and can assign it to your user profile, we offer a so-called ‘DynDNS service’. Please set this up.

With DoH, it is also possible to use a customised URL (e.g. doh12.jusprogdns.com/child.account.password), meaning that DynDNS is not required. This is particularly well suited for using the parental control filter with MDM on tablets (iPads, Android) for home schooling.

Tip: If the “DynDNS service” is ever unable to recognise your dynamic IP address (this is often the case, for example, with mobile devices using mobile data, which frequently have different IP addresses), your child will browse at the age level you selected when entering the nameserver IP address into the device (specific nameserver IP addresses are assigned to each age level, see above), even if you may have specified a different age group in your profile. Therefore, please always ensure that the name server IPs corresponding to the relevant age group (see above) are entered on the device.

Before allowing a child to browse the internet on the device, you, as an adult (without your child present), should first check whether JusProgDNS has been set up correctly and is working.

To test this, first visit the children’s search engine website www.fragfinn.de to check whether the device can still access the internet. fragFINN is enabled ‘from 0 years’. Next, visit, for example, a well-known adult website and check whether a blocking page is displayed instead of the adult content.
