How to configure your own settings in JusProgDNS

JusProgDNS’s child and youth protection feature works by age group even without registration or logging in – simply select the IP addresses corresponding to the desired age group for the name server of the devices to which minors have access. (Note: If you are not a private individual, you must register). An alternative to the IP addresses are our custom DoH links.

However, you can also configure your own settings on JusProgDNS – for example, to allow or block additional websites yourself (Custom Lists – Allow List or Block List). To do this, two conditions must be met:

  • You have registered with JusProgDNS (free of charge, no adverts)
  • You have entered your IP address in your profile or are using the individual DoH links

Tip: To prevent misuse, the number of nameserver queries without registration on JusProgDNS is limited to the daily amount typical for private households. If your child spends a lot of time online, this quota may not be sufficient. Registered private users receive a larger quota free of charge.

Why do you need to register your own IP address with JusProgDNS?

Your IP address is a bit like your personal postcode on the internet. When you visit a website, the website’s data (text, images, etc.) has to find its way across the internet to your computer. Your ‘address’ on the internet for the delivery of this data is a combination of numbers known as an IP address. It looks something like this: 123.456.78.999.

JusProgDNS makes use of this technical basis of data traffic on the internet to match your child with the settings you have specified in your JusProgDNS profile whilst they are browsing. This is because when you set up JusProgDNS on a device, you cannot enter a login name there, and JusProgDNS would not be able to recognise that queries to our name servers originate from your child.

This is where your personal IP address comes into play. Whilst your child is browsing, this combination of numbers (e.g. 123.456.789.0) is technically transmitted to our JusProgDNS servers, as our data (in this case: name server information) must, after all, find its way to your child’s computer.

The rest is simple to understand: if you have entered your personal home IP address in your profile, we can link your child’s queries (and thus the IP address automatically transmitted with them) to your profile and, for example, ensure that a website you have additionally added to your block list is actually blocked.

Schools and organisations must register

To prevent misuse, the usage quota for our JusProgDNS name servers is limited to the level typically found in private households unless you register. By registering and associating your IP address (or using individual DoH links), you will automatically be allocated a significantly larger quota. For schools, nurseries and charitable organisations, this is provided at the data centres’ cost price (see Terms of Use for details).

When registering, please provide accurate details of your organisation’s type and a valid email address. We may ask you to provide proof of your organisation’s status.
